Crozet Master Plan Kickoff Workshop
Share your vision for the future of Crozet!

The Master Plan is a visionary document used to guide how development and public investment happens in the future. Your participation is key to this process!

Join us for a fun night where we’ll learn about the Master Plan and how the County plans for the future, and share thoughts and ideas about the future of Crozet through conversation and activities.

The Crozet Community Association (CCA) is helping to host and sponsor this event and the workshops to come.

Dinner (pizza from Sal’s) will be available at the workshop on Monday night, September 9, as well as an activity center for the children (Lego Challenges and drawing stuff).  This children’s activity center will have aides there to assist and will be in the WAHS Cafeteria, where all parts of the Workshop will also take place, including the four breakout sessions around the sides of the room, where parents can keep an eye on their children.

About the Master Plan

The Crozet Master Plan is the County’s guiding document for land use, transportation, and parks decisions in Crozet.   This is the second revision to the Crozet Master Plan.  The original Crozet Master Plan was adopted in 2005 and revised the first time in 2010.  The current Crozet Master Plan is available for reference at the Crozet Library or online at Albemarle County’s website.

From September through December, Albemarle County will host a series of community conversations and workshops to identify an inclusive and shared vision for the future of Crozet. Focus area and topic-specific workshops will begin in January 2020, as informed by your input during the visioning phase. All are welcome (and encouraged!) to attend the forums that interest them.  The Crozet Community Association is helping with hosting these events and highly encourages your active participation and attendance.

From the August 8, 2019 agenda of the Albemarle County School Board:

Claudius Crozet Park is a 22 acre community non-profit recreational facility open to all. It is managed by Claudius Crozet Park, Inc., a non-profit organization managed by volunteers. Currently, the Park’s Board is in the planning phases of an expanded and updated facility to meet the needs of the growing community. The park is soliciting private donations but they will also be requesting partial funding from the Board of Supervisors later this month.

The new Crozet Park Aquatics and Fitness Center will feature a gymnasium, indoor walking track, fitness areas and community rooms. A key component of the facility is space for after-school and summer programming. Currently, the YMCA leases the existing building and offers programming to only 27 students as it is limited by available space. The new facility will offer space for a program that could serve as many as 300 students.

Affordable, quality after-school care is in great demand throughout the county including the Western Feeder Pattern. There are currently 123 students on the wait lists for the Extended Day Enrichment Program (EDEP) at the four western feeder pattern elementary schools. That figure does not include families who do not apply because they cannot afford the program. As documented in the 2017 program evaluation of EDEP and subsequent Board conversations since, increased access to after-school care opportunities is needed.

The Park Board is seeking a letter of support demonstrating the need for increased after school opportunities before it goes before the Board of Supervisors on August 21st.

Making a Contribution

These events involve a lot of donated time from a lot of individuals and donated materials and services from local companies, but it still cannot happen without financial contributions, too.  All we ask is a donation of $4 per person (and $2 donation for children 12 and under for the child amusements) as you enter the festivities (parking is free).

Your donation helps to pay for the fireworks and event expenses.  The non-profit civic groups in Crozet are the ones that benefit from any money raised above the cost of the event.  Last year we donated over $7,000 to local civic groups, including the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, Claudius Crozet Park, and the Crozet Trails Crew, so please be generous.

Of course, we appreciate all donations, but to boost our efforts to cover expenses, we have three leadership donor levels and we are hoping that you will show your support by becoming a lead patron this year.

  • For a gift of $500 or more, we will prominently display your company banner you provide at the entrance to the park during the event, identify your patron status in the Crozet Gazette and event handbill and provide you with ten passes to the celebration in the park as well as published thanks in the Crozet Gazette and the event handbill.
  • For a gift of $250 to $499, you will receive acknowledgment in the Crozet Gazette and event handbill and four passes to the celebration in the park.
  • And, for a gift of $100 to $249, you will receive two passes to the celebration in the park, published thanks in the Crozet Gazette and the event handbill.

We need your help for just an hour or two on Sunday, June 29.   Below is the website to sign-up to help with the Crozet Independence Day Celebration (CIDC) between 5PM to 10PM. There are a variety of tasks and time slots. Most of the time slots are only an hour – so there’s lots of ways to help and still enjoy the event.

GIVE INPUT ON RT. 240-250-680 ROUNDABOUT PROJECT

Proposed roundabout at routes 240/250/680CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation invites the public to attend an upcoming design public hearing for the proposed project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route 240 (Three Notched Road), Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 680 (Browns Gap Turnpike) in Albemarle County.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Field School of Charlottesville, 1408 Crozet Avenue, Crozet.

At the open house-style hearing, VDOT staff will be available to discuss the project at the open house style hearing. The public can review project plans, ask questions and obtain information about the project’s timeline, cost and travel impacts, as well as provide feedback on the project orally or in writing. Brochure Adobe Acrobat PDF (602 KB)

The proposed roundabout will improve safety at the busy intersection. Roundabouts are safer than conventional stop-controlled intersections because traffic can continually and efficiently flow through the intersection and vehicle operating speeds are lower. Additionally, roundabouts help reduce air pollution and fuel use compared to a signalized intersection due to reduced idling and less acceleration and deceleration.

During construction, VDOT proposes to close Route 680 to through traffic between Route 250 and Route 802 (Old Three Notched Road) with a posted detour. Traffic would be detoured via Route 240 to Route 802 for about two months. Proposed Detour map Adobe Acrobat PDF (2 MB)

State Farm Neighborhood Assist® is back to help good neighbors across the U.S. take an active role in improving their communities. State Farm will once again be awarding $25,000 grants in support of 40 causes. Now’s your chance to make a real difference in your neighborhood.

Download the short guide to help you start thinking about how you would use a $25,000 grant to fund a neighborhood project involved in Education, Safety or Community Development.
Then, starting June 5, 2019, you can officially submit your cause at NeighborhoodAssist.com.

State Farm will accept 2,000 applications, and narrow it down to 200 finalists. Then a public vote will decide which 40 community causes win the $25,000 grants.

Spots fill up fast, but if you use the guide and get prepared now you won’t miss out!

Who is Crozet?

The Downtown Crozet Initiative is planning two events to try to answer Who is Crozet?
Below is a message from them:

As Crozet evolves, it is important to communicate a clear and distinct identity that celebrates the unique characteristics and future goals of the community. Who is Crozet? What do we want it to become?
Those are two important questions we plan to tackle in the coming months. And, we’re asking for the community’s help.

The redevelopment of downtown Crozet is moving forward. Final designs for the plaza and Phase 1 are expected to be approved by the end of this year. If this occurs, groundbreaking for the new plaza will take place in early 2020. To ensure that downtown Crozet develops in a way that preserves the assets that make it so special, we’ve hired local firm Hive Creative Group to help us define Crozet’s identity. Together, we hope to develop a strategy that acknowledges Crozet’s roots, celebrates the current community, and determines a vision for the future. This is an important step; if we don’t define who Crozet is, outsiders are going to do it for us. No one understands Crozet better than the people who live here, so we’re hoping for community support and participation!

Hive Creative Group plans to host two community brainstorm sessions as part of the first phase of this branding process. The two sessions will cover the same topics of discussion. They will be held at Restoration in the large event room. The session dates and times are as follows:

Crozet Independence Day Celebration 2019

The Ninth Annual Crozet Independence Day Parade, Celebration, and Fireworks,  Saturday, June 29, 2019

Again this year, BOTH LANES of Park Road, High Street, and Tabor Street will be one-way out from Claudius Crozet Park to Crozet Avenue after the fireworks (from about 10 to 10:30 PM).   See the map below for details.  Please note these traffic disruptions as you make your plans for the evening of Saturday, June 29.

It all starts with the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) parade at 5:00 PM at Crozet Elementary School and goes down Crozet Avenue through downtown Crozet to Claudius Crozet Park.  The Parade Grand Marshal is Phil James.

If you would like to be a part of the 2019 Crozet Firemen’s parade, please submit your entry to be in the parade  to ensure you are included in the lineup. Lineup will be based on a first come basis. Horses/livestock will be placed near or at the end of the parade. Lineup will begin at 4:00 P.M. at Crozet Elementary School and the parade ends at Claudius Crozet Park.   Awards will be presented around 7:30 P.M.

The celebration begins at Claudius Crozet Park after the parade, where there will be live music by local band Jacabone.    Bring a lawn chair if you want to be comfortable as you listen to the local band, Jacabone.     Traditional American Fourth of July fare will be available,  hot dogs,  popcorn, funnel cake, savory and sweet waffles, pies, and sno-cones, as well as vegetarian and vegan choices, tacos, and other favorites!  Starr Hill, and  Pro Re Nata Beer and Bold Rock Cider will also be available for a separate cost.  Event culminates at 9:30 PM with a stupendous fireworks show. (We have it at 9:30 PM so it’s late enough to be dark, but not too late to for the youngsters to view the show.)

There are no pets allowed in the event and we’ll provide designated smoking areas and ask that you only smoke in those areas.  If you live nearby Crozet Park, we encourage you to walk!

How much would you pay for such good times?  All that’s asked is a donation of $4 per person (and suggested donation for children 12 and under of $2 for the child amusements) as you enter the festivities (parking is free).  The non-profit civic groups in Crozet are the ones that benefit from any money raised above the cost of the event, so please be generous. Each of the past two years, we’ve donated over $7,000 to CVFD, WARS, Crozet Park, and other civic groups.

The usual right travel lane of Tabor Street must turn RIGHT onto Crozet Avenue.
The left lane (“wrong” side of the road) of Tabor Street must turn LEFT onto Crozet Avenue.

If you live between Crozet Park and Crozet Avenue, you can only exit to Crozet Avenue during this period, not go toward or past Crozet Park.
