Mint Springs Closed for Repairs
Thursday, November 19, 2020

Due to damage caused by flooding, Mint Springs Valley Park will be closed for the day on Thursday, November 19th. The repairs to a culvert pipe that crosses the park entry are expected to be completed on Thursday. County staff anticipate the park reopening on Friday, November 20th.

Thank you for your patience as the County makes the repairs necessary for park safety.

This 520-acre park (with 8 water acres, and 1 beach acre), provides several recreational amenities including a seasonal swimming beach, 2 reservable picnic shelters, a playground, and 5 miles of trails.

South Fork Rivanna River Water Quality Study Kick Off Meeting

South Fork Rivanna River Water Quality Study Community Kick Off VIRTUAL Meeting

This virtual community meeting is being held on Wednesday, Nov 18, 2020 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM to share information about an upcoming water quality study of the South Fork Rivanna River and several of its tributaries. Monitoring of aquatic insects that live on the bottom of the stream has shown that something is “bugging the bugs” that call these streams home. These insects act as a barometer of stream health, warning us of potential pollutants that may be entering our waterways.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) will be working with the local community over the next several months to collect input on this study, which will identify pollutants of concern in these streams, along with the reductions needed in those pollutants to allow the streams to support a healthy population of aquatic life.
This meeting will serve as the first in many opportunities for local residents to share information about these streams and their community, ask questions, and learn more about how they can get involved in the clean-up process of local water quality improvement.

Note: When state waters are assessed to be impaired for one or more reasons, Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) or TMDL alternatives are developed by Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) to determine the total amount of a pollutant that a waterbody can handle without resulting in the impaired status of that waterbody.

Voting in Albemarle County

Cast your Vote Early In-Person through Saturday, October 31st

With just one week until Election Day, Albemarle County voters are encouraged to explore the option of voting early in-person. Voters interested in this option have until 5 pm on Saturday, October 31st to cast an early in-person vote.

Residents can vote early in-person at the County Office Building at 1600 5th Street Conference Room A at the following times:

  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 am to 5 pm
  • Tuesdays from 7 am to 5 pm
  • Thursdays from 8:30 am to 7 pm
  • Saturday, October 31 from 9 am to 5 pm

This experience is very similar to voting in person on Election Day – you’ll be checked in using the electronic pollbooks, given a ballot and sent to mark it, and then you’ll feed your marked ballot into a scanner which will count your vote. Usually, the entire process takes around 10 minutes.

Anyone voting in-person at any time should remember to wear a face covering and to keep six feet of distance from other voters. Enhanced cleaning protocols are in place to keep you and others safe while casting your vote.

Book a Free Ride to the Polls with Jaunt

Jaunt has temporarily expanded its service in urban Albemarle County to provide rides to the polls, fare-free. You can reserve a ride to the polls, either on Election Day or to vote early, by calling 434-297-2627 or by emailing trips@ridejaunt.org. Due to COVID-19, Jaunt buses are operating at reduced capacity, drivers and passengers are required to wear cloth face coverings, and vehicles are cleaned and disinfected daily.

Drop your Mail Ballot Off at 5th Street or the New Location at Albemarle High School

This week, the Albemarle County Registrar’s office is operating a mail ballot drop box at the Albemarle High School Parking Lot on Hydraulic Road in addition to the drop box located at the County Office Building on 5th Street. Albemarle County voters may drop their completed mail ballots at either location during the specified dates and times below.

This additional location will operate during the last week before the election (October 26 – October 30) only and will be staffed by three Albemarle County Election Officers who will then bring the dropped-off ballots to the Registrar’s Office to be counted.

Mail-In Ballot Drop Box at Albemarle High School

  • Monday (10/26), Wednesday (10/28) and Friday (10/30), 8 am– 11 am
  • Tuesday (10/27) & Thursday (10/29), 2 pm – 5 pm

Mail-In Ballot Drop Box at County Office Building on 5th Street

  • 24 hours per day, 7 days per week through Election Day – November 3 – at 7 pm

Important Reminders:

  • We will only accept ballots from Albemarle County voters.
  • Make certain that your marked ballot is placed in envelope B and envelope B is inserted in your Ballot return envelope before dropping it in the box.
  • This location will be open ONLY at the times and days listed above. If these times are not convenient, you can use the drop-box at the County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, which is available 24 hours a day and every day of the week until 7 pm on Election Day, November 3rd. These are the only drop-off locations authorized before Election Day. Do not leave your mail-in ballot envelope at any other location, at any other time or place.
  • On Election Day, all 30 polling places in the county will also have a Mail-In Ballot Box for your Mail-In Ballot envelope until 7 pm on November 3rd, 2020. Voters may drop off their Mail-In Ballots at any county polling place location on Election Day.

Ways to Vote

There are three options to cast your vote in the upcoming November 2020 General Election.
By Mail

  • Applications for mail-in ballots are now closed.
  • Mail-in ballots must be mailed in to the Voter Registration Office or personally delivered to the Voter Registration Office by November 3. However, we recommend returning them as soon as possible.
  • Track your ballot online .

Early In-Person

  • Starting Friday, September 18 through Saturday, October 31, registered voters can vote early in-person in Conference Room A at the 5th Street County Office Building at 1600 5th St.
  • Voters will present acceptable ID, get checked in on the electronic pollbooks, be handed a ballot, and directed to a ballot marking booth; the voter will mark the ballot, and then insert it into a DS200 ballot scanning machine. Curbside voting will also be available.
  • Hours for early in-person voting are:
  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 am to 5 pm
  • Tuesdays from 7 am to 5 pm
  • Thursdays from 8:30 am to 7 pm
  • Saturday, October 24 from 9 am to 5 pm
  • Saturday, October 31 from 9 am to 5 pm

Election Day, November 3

  • At your Polling Place on Election Day
  • All 30 Albemarle County voting precinct polling places will be open on election day, November 3, 2020, from 6 am to 7 pm. Enhanced cleaning and distancing protocols will be in effect to keep voters safe. To find your polling place, visit https://www.elections.virginia.gov/citizen-portal/

FYI: At the close of the day Monday, 10/26, two new scanners were put into use.  The former two were at capacity with well over 9000 counted votes each.  Close to 20,000 votes were collected.   Yesterday (10/26) alone saw 900 votes casted or 100 per hour.  Busy day to say the least.  These numbers do not include absentee ballots that have been returned via mail and drop box.  The estimated number is between 14,000 to 14,500. Early voting ends after this Saturday, October 31, 2020 (Halloween).

However, the 2010 Master Plan recommends limiting new development on Route 250. This area is currently shown as Neighborhood Density Residential with a vegetated buffer on Route 250.

Apologies for the very short notice, but I want to let you all know that there is a community meeting TONIGHT at 6 p.m (7/29) for ZMA2020-05, which is a rezoning application for a property near the Crozet Veterinary Care Clinic, a project named Old Dominion Village. More information, and instructions for joining the Zoom meeting, are included in the PDF (click here to view or download).

Throughout the Master Plan Update process, many Crozet residents have said how they value opportunities for recreation, open space, and protecting natural resources. Now, you are invited to participate in the conversation on conservation goals for Crozet.
