Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee Updates

Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee Updates

Update from Albemarle County Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee

Do you know what happens to your trash after it leaves your home? In recent years, Albemarle's residents have generated an average of over one ton of solid waste per person, per year. According to the US EPA, about 50% of household solid waste is able to be recycled and about 33% is able to be composted. In our region, however, 65% of waste goes to landfills.

The Board of Supervisors appointed the Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee to explore solid waste management in Albemarle County, make policy recommendations, and identify best practices. The Committee has met biweekly since May 2014 and on August 5, the Committee presented a draft report to the Board of Supervisors on solid waste management policy and implementation strategies. A final report will be presented to the Board of Supervisors in October 2015. The Committee is soliciting your input once more before they finalize their recommendations – weigh in now to be heard. The draft report is available for review here.

Weigh in!
Read the report and send your comments to Matt Reges (mreges@albemarle.org)
Attend an upcoming Committee meeting: August 25th and September 8th. Meetings are held from 1 – 2:30 pm at the County Office Building in Room 246 (401 McIntire Road). Check the County Calendar for complete meeting details.
For more information on the Committee's work, please visit their webpage.

Dominion Virginia Power Deceptive Smart Meter Practices

Dominion Virginia Power Deceptive Smart Meter Practices.
via email from Ann Mallek – August 6, 2015

Please help to make residents aware of deceptive practices on the part of Dominion Virginia Power smart meter installers.

Two Board of Supervisors members have been approached recently by Dominion Virginia Power smart meter installers at their homes to accept installation of smart meters. When each expressed concerns about smart meter installation, the installer stated that Dominion was charging an ongoing surcharge of $30 per month for the non-communicating alternative to a smart meter.

When challenged about the validity of the $360 annual fee to access the non-communicating alternative, the Dominion Smart Meter team confirmed on 8/6/15 that this threatened surcharge does not exist:
I apologize for any confusion, currently there is no fee for a Non-Communicating Meter and Dominion has not filed for permission to charge a fee.

An opt out program is available to all residents with no fee, as assured by Dominion representatives who came before the Board of Supervisors last year to talk about smart meters. Citizens are directed to the Dominion website to access opt out program information:
https://www.dom.com/library/domcom/pdfs/virginia-power/smartmeter/meter-option-requirements.pdf
Or can request opt out program information by email:
SmartMeter@dom.com

I want to prevent deceptive misinformation from adversely affecting Albemarle County residents. If you have experienced a visit from a Dominion Virginia Power smart meter installer and received this type of misinformation, please contact your Albemarle supervisor at BOS@albemarle.org. Please include your contact information.

Thank you.

VDOT Traffic Alert: RT. 671 (Millington Road) CLOSED 2015 JULY 21-22

On Tuesday, July 21, the Virginia Department of Transportation will close Route 671 (Millington Road) in western Albemarle County to replace a structurally deficient storm drainage pipe under the roadway.

The road will be closed at 9 a.m. approximately 0.3 mile north of Route 614 (Garth Road) and is expected to reopen the afternoon of July 22, weather permitting.

Through traffic should use an alternate route during the closure. Northbound motorists will be detoured west on Route 671 to Route 810 (Browns Gap Turnpike), and then right onto Route 674 (Clark Road), which carries traffic back to Route 671. Southbound motorists will reverse the detour.
Road and weather conditions, traffic camera feeds and other real-time travel information are available on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. Local updates are also on VDOT's Facebook and Twitter. Call 1-800-FOR-ROAD to report road problems or request information about Virginia’s highways.

Albemarle County has a long history of commitment to protecting its reservoirs, lakes, and streams – collectively, our water resources. Over the past few years, new and expanded State mandates have significantly increased the scope and cost of the County's water resource protection programs. The Board of Supervisors has indicated a desire to explore establishing a dedicated funding mechanism – separate from the general fund – to better support these programs. The Board will consider the funding mechanisms at a work session scheduled in the fall of 2015.

The Water Resources Funding Advisory Committee (WRFAC) has met monthly since September 2014 to explore potential funding mechanisms for the water resources program. The WRFAC has 13 appointed members of the public representing a diversity of stakeholder interests and is supported by County staff and an engineering consultant, along with liaisons from the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission. These meetings, in combination this public engagement process, will shape the recommendation by the WRFAC to the Board of Supervisors on how best to fund Albemarle County's Water Resources Program moving forward.
