Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee Updates

Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee Updates

Update from Albemarle County Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee

Do you know what happens to your trash after it leaves your home? In recent years, Albemarle's residents have generated an average of over one ton of solid waste per person, per year. According to the US EPA, about 50% of household solid waste is able to be recycled and about 33% is able to be composted. In our region, however, 65% of waste goes to landfills.

The Board of Supervisors appointed the Long Range Solid Waste Solutions Advisory Committee to explore solid waste management in Albemarle County, make policy recommendations, and identify best practices. The Committee has met biweekly since May 2014 and on August 5, the Committee presented a draft report to the Board of Supervisors on solid waste management policy and implementation strategies. A final report will be presented to the Board of Supervisors in October 2015. The Committee is soliciting your input once more before they finalize their recommendations – weigh in now to be heard. The draft report is available for review here.

Weigh in!
Read the report and send your comments to Matt Reges (mreges@albemarle.org)
Attend an upcoming Committee meeting: August 25th and September 8th. Meetings are held from 1 – 2:30 pm at the County Office Building in Room 246 (401 McIntire Road). Check the County Calendar for complete meeting details.
For more information on the Committee's work, please visit their webpage.
