Crozet Community Association (CCA) Meeting Minutes

Welcome:  Tim Tolson, President, welcomed everyone at 7:33.  There were 24 members in attendance. 

Agenda Review:  David Wayland mentioned that he was given a community concern about the roads.  It was added to New Business.

Approval of last meeting's minutes (May 10, 2012): The minutes were unanimously approved on a motion to accept as presented by Phil Best and seconded by Lisa Goehler. 

Treasurer's Report (Emery Taylor): Emery reported that the bank account balance is $428.82 and that he had received three memberships to make a balance of $458.82.  Our account is at BB&T.

A Moment in Crozet History (Phil James): Phil James took us back Crozet High School in 1928.

Three items of interest were discussed from school newspaper.

1)   the behavior of the buses and the principal spoke to the boys of the school.

2)   Candy sale to help pay for the hot water heater. School Board would pay $15 of the $54 cost.  School had to fund the remaining $30.

3)   Soup and Cocoa.  Cocoa was served on Fridays for 5 cents a cup with the hot soup.

Presentation of Good Neighbor Awards: Tim Tolson presented the following awards to

1)   Scott Baker, the plaque read: “ Jonathan Scott Baker: In appreciation for his setting the highest example of sportsmanship, citizenship, and honor as president of Greenwood baseball and for his pivotal contribution to security to the future of the league.”

2)   Tom Loach, the plaque read: “ Tom Loach: In recognition and thanks for decades of frontline leadership, winning advocacy     and transformative service to the community of Crozet as Planning Commissioner, Volunteer Fireman, Crozet Community Association President, and his farsighted contributions to our master planning history.”

Update and Report on the Crozet Trails Crew (CTC) Crozet Trails Day on Sunday, October 21^st.  (http://crozettrailscrew.org; Jessica Mauzy)  Jessica reported that the Greenway connector trail is getting more complete.  They have built a bridge and it is named the Joseph Taylor Bridge from the winner of the first 5K race.  More bridges are planned to be built.  Third Annual Crozet Trails Day will include tree planting.  There will be plenty of possibilities for other non-profit organizations to have fund raising that day. 

Updates and News from our supervisor, Ann Mallek:  Ann spoke briefly about June 30^th storm and the trouble it brought to the community.  She spoke briefly on VDOT and the frustrations with VDOT.  September 18^th the CCAC meeting will discuss the Streetscape plan in Crozet and the West Lake Development Plan.  An update on these projects from Trevor Henry, Albemarle County Director of Facilities Development was passed around for review. 

David Wayland shared the concern expressed to him about the roadway by DQ had a left hand turn and a right hand turn, but no straight ahead markings.  Also at Jarman’s Gap Road and Crozet Avenue, the new stop bar marking on Jarman’s Gap Road is so far back from Crozet Avenue that a vehicle does not have enough sight clearance to see oncoming traffic.  Most present echoed this concern and Ann Mallek promised to contact VDOT about getting these markings changed. 

Old Business:

·      Update on the Build Crozet Library fundraising (http://buildcrozetlibrary.org; Bill Schrader): Bill spoke on the six degrees separation.  All of us know someone who knows someone who is able to write a very large check in support of the new Crozet Library.  Encourage people to inform the library fundraising committee to seek interviews with these folks.  Organizations around Crozet are coming to the plate and making donations towards the new library.

·      Report on Crozet Independence Day Celebration June 30.  (Mike Marshall) Mike reported that the fireworks donations of this year will help provide the start-up money needed for next year.

·      Update on Crozet Historic District application process. (Mike Marshall)  Mike reported that the historic account needs about $1,400 to finish pay Arcadia Preservation/Jennifer Hallock for the report that’s been submitted to the state and federal agencies that approve the designation.

·      Update on Claudius Crozet Park including Grand opening of the pool dome, child care, skateboard trail, Work Day, and of course Arts & Crafts Festival (Kelly Strickland)  Kelly reported that the YMCA/PARC has gone over projections on memberships so far.  September 25^th will be the date for the “dome raising” and will need lots of strong shoulders.  Child Care at the Park has been started for “Stay and Play Program”.  On October 19^th the 9^th graders from WAHS will be working in the park.  We need more adult supervisors.  Annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival is October 13 and 14^th.  This event supports the park and its activities.  Two 36-foot tennis courts are ready and there will be a tennis tournament for 10 and under.  The Park has raised almost 50% of the funding for two adult tennis courts.  Long-range pavilion design still in the planning stages.  Soon to have a perimeter trail around the park for walkers.

New Business:

·      The First Annual Crozet Culinary Competition for Charity on Thursday, September 20, 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Lodge at Old Trail.   Volunteers are needed to help staff the event.  This is a fundraiser for the new Crozet/Western Albemarle Library and Claudius Crozet Park pavilion replacement fund (which needs raise $20K to augment insurance funds).

·       There are vacancies on several Albemarle County Boards and Commissions, several of which are specifically for White Hall District residents.  YOU are encouraged to apply. ·      Crozet Community Advisory Council meeting next WEDNESDAY, September 19 at 7:00 PM at The Meadows.  Note date change is just this once.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.
